About Cenex
Independent: Cenex is a unique, influential low emission vehicle research and consultancy business. Though we are a small organisation, we are one of the leading voices in the UK for many sectors of the low and zero emission transport industry. We have earned this position through being truly independent and technology agnostic – we collect the evidence through our research and use it to steer our advice.
Not-for-profit: When you are trying to change the world, it helps if you aren’t having to worry about the finances! We are funded through the work we do for our customers, but if something’s the right thing to do, but it doesn’t pay – we’ll always try to find a way to do it.
Experts: We specialise in helping public and private sector organisations evaluate and deliver low emission vehicle and associated infrastructure strategies to enable them to achieve their own emission reduction targets. We provide our clients with targeted advice and support that can make an immediate impact. However, to do this we need to stay at the forefront of research and innovation so that we are always giving the best advice and support available at the time.

The Role
We are currently recruiting for either an Assistant Technical Specialist or a Technical Specialist (dependent on experience) with a background in electric vehicle infrastructure to join our Fleet Consultancy Team, within our Policy, Strategy and Implementation Department. The team primarily works with public and private sector fleet operators, including local authorities, waste management fleets, utilities companies, emergency services and charities to map effective strategies which help customers, clients and end-users navigate the route to net zero.
The fleet team specifically provides fleets with advice on zero emission vehicle suitability and renewable fuels, develops net-zero strategies, performs depot power supply assessments, manages vehicle trials and builds various tools for decarbonisation guidance.
Due to an opening in this team, we are recruiting a consultant to deliver projects in sustainable energy and transport. This role, which reports to the Fleet Strategy Lead, will be principally responsible for:
- Providing expert consultancy on transport and energy infrastructure to both public and private sector clients.
- Leading infrastructure assessments for clients, including visiting depots and determining the impacts of transitioning fleet vehicles to battery electric or alternative technologies. This will include assessing power supply capacity constraints, impacts of on-site power generation and any practical considerations.
- Delivering specific tasks or whole projects around the topic of zero emission transport infrastructure.
- Contributing written content and technical analysis for the preparation of reports.
- Delivering qualitative and quantitative analysis and cost/benefit analyses to feed into projects across the business.
- Contributing to the development of proposals for new work.
- Owning and developing tools for internal and external use, particularly relating to fleet infrastructure assessments.
- Able to follow and develop procedures, relating to fleet, infrastructure and site assessments.
We are looking for someone who can make an immediate contribution, so it is likely that you possess the following attributes:
- STEM degree (or equivalent) or extensive background in electric vehicle infrastructure
- Experience in assessing requirements for electric vehicle infrastructure and determining feasibility, both practically on-site and theoretically with modelling
- Experience in performing strategic electrical power supply assessments for sites (reviewing substation, distribution boards, earthing arrangements etc.)
- Experience engaging with relevant Distribution Network Operators (DNO) to obtain budget estimates for required power supply upgrades where appropriate.
- Strong technical experience in relevant topics, such as EV charging infrastructure, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, fleet infrastructure planning or similar
- Ability to balance and manage the delivery of a portfolio of projects, often with competing deadlines
- Strong analytical and data analysis skills, including delivering qualitative, quantitative, and cost/benefit analyses and development of tools, models and spreadsheets to support the efficient delivery of our activities
- Demonstration of excellent communication, organising and influencing skills, including being able to present technically challenging data in verbal and written form
- Excellent technical report writing skills, delivering complex content in a succinct, easy-to-digest format.
- Ability to work and travel flexibly in mainland Europe and UK
In addition, we are very interested in hearing from candidates who possess any of the following:
- Additional electrical qualifications (e.g. BS7671 18th Edition IET or equivalent)
- Previous experience in a fleet, energy or transport related consultancy role
- Experience in developing zero emission strategies and implementation plans
- Competent in the use of any of the following: VBA, MATLAB, Python, R, SQL, or GIS.
- Relevant postgraduate qualification.
