The Challenge
With the UK government’s goal to make all new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) zero emission by 2040, and HGVs under 26 tonnes by 2035, fleet operators are facing increasing pressure to transition to cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. However, many operators lack the tools to assess alternatively fuelled vehicles’ viability, cost, and operational suitability, making informed purchasing decisions difficult. The transport sector requires a reliable tool that could help fleet operators navigate these challenges, reduce their emissions, and move toward net-zero targets efficiently.
The Development
Cenex, in partnership with Transport for London (TfL), developed the LoCITY Fleet Advice Tool. This tool is specifically designed to help fleet operators make data-driven decisions about adopting low-emission vehicles. It provides detailed information on the cost, range, performance, and emissions of a variety of alternatively fuelled commercial vehicles available in the UK.
The tool enables users to input specific fleet data and obtain tailored insights on operational performance, economic viability, and carbon savings. Integrated into the tool is the Commercial Vehicle Finder (CVF), which highlights over 200 vehicles across six categories, allowing operators to explore a wide range of low-emission options, from cargo bikes to rigid trucks.
The Result
The LoCITY Fleet Advice Tool has been incredibly valuable for fleet operators, providing important insights to support the transition to zero emission vehicles. For instance, an 18-tonne rigid truck travelling 10,000 miles per year can save over £5,000 in running costs by switching to a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Moreover, medium vans have been shown to reduce whole-life costs by approximately £3,700 compared to diesel alternatives.
The tool’s flexibility and real-time data optimisation ensure that fleet operators can make well-informed, sustainable decisions, helping them efficiently achieve their decarbonisation goals. With the guidance and resources provided by Cenex, many fleets have already realised significant cost and emissions savings, accelerating their progress toward net-zero targets.
