Midlands Net Zero Hub
Project
Project Brief
The Midlands Net Zero Hub (MNZH) assists councils in transitioning their fleets to zero-emission vehicles through the Electrification of Depots Feasibility Funding Competition. Following the success of the initial competition in January 2024, MNZH is preparing for a second round and has launched the Fleet Review Support Phase to help local authorities (LAs) prepare.
This phase provides LAs with a comprehensive evaluation of their current fleets, offering essential insights into fleet electrification, infrastructure needs, and projected electrical demand. By ensuring that LAs start with a similar knowledge base, this initiative will help more councils successfully apply for the next funding round and accelerate their plans for fleet decarbonisation.
Cenex has been commissioned by MNZH to conduct this fleet analysis, equipping local authorities with the data and guidance needed to advance their transition to zero emission transport.
Objectives
- Conducting detailed fleet analyses for 10 LAs across the Midlands.
- Develop a detailed and comprehensive understanding of each of the 10 LAs current fleet baseline, including vehicle types, duty cycles, costs and emissions.
- Undertake a detailed assessment of the operational suitability, infrastructure requirements, costs, and emissions impacts of battery electric vehicles.
- Providing additional LAs with a roadmap for fleet electrification and infrastructure, to better prepare them for future MNZH funding.
Deliverables
- For each individual vehicle, Cenex will calculate the average daily power required to charge battery electric vehicles during their typical operation. From this power requirement, Cenex will calculate the number and type of chargepoints required at each location.
- Based on these power requirements and the existing power demand at LA depots, Cenex will determine the peak power demand on site, including an analysis of the effects of load management. Cenex will then determine whether a grid upgrade is likely to be required if the fleet is to be transitioned to battery electric vehicles.
- Cenex will provide a clear transition plan, outlining the roadmap for fleet decarbonisation with recommendations for next steps.
