Paua PINS

Project

Project Brief

The Paua PINS (Private Infrastructure Network Solution) project, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered through Innovate UK, aims to enable vehicle operators to share the use of private depot charge points. This initiative represents a significant step in decarbonising fleet operations by providing businesses access to shared charging infrastructure.

The project is a collaboration among Paua, Cenex, Oxfordshire County Council, and Suffolk County Council. It is part of the Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators programme. The goal of the project is to demonstrate how businesses can generate additional revenue by allowing other fleets to charge at their depots and by monetising their existing charging infrastructure.

Objectives

The project’s primary objectives include demonstrating how shared depot charging can decarbonise business fleets, reduce costs, and increase access to charging infrastructure. Partners will work towards creating a lightweight payment ecosystem that simplifies depot sharing for businesses. Additionally, the project will highlight the potential for businesses to increase revenue by offering access to their charging points.

Cenex aims to provide insights into the shareability of depots and the extent to which fleets rely on shared infrastructure for their operations. To achieve this, Cenex will create guidance that matches different depot and fleet archetypes. This will help identify the best pairings of visiting fleets and host depots, as well as highlight pairings that may pose challenges. Additionally, the guidance will address the issues related to these more difficult pairings.

Deliverables

Cenex will engage with fleet operators and other stakeholders to identify the barriers and opportunities associated with shared depot charging. This includes conducting outreach activities to gather insights, managing the coordination of stakeholders, and participating in public webinars to discuss early findings from the project. Cenex will also play a key role in disseminating the results and learnings to ensure the wider transport community can benefit from the project’s outcomes. Cenex will finally amalgamate project findings to produce a best practice guidance for depot sharing in the form of a public report.
