Are we nearly there yet?
Resource
Summary
Created in collaboration with Vauxhall, the ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?’ report explores the current state of public electric vehicle infrastructure. Research indicates limitations in existing metrics used to measure progress. To address these limitations, the project introduces three new metrics: Near Home Charging, Journey Charging, and Destination Charging.
The new metrics aim to provide a more relevant, actionable, scalable and measurable framework for tracking the deployment of EVI. By analysing supply, demand, and distribution, the report provides actionable insights for policymakers, local authorities, and stakeholders to enhance public charging networks.
Key Points
- Existing EVI metrics fail to adequately capture user needs or regional disparities, hindering effective progress tracking.
- Using a unique combination of Cenex and partner datasets, we have created and analysed these new and improved EVI metrics across the whole of Great Britain, and found:
- Near home charging index: supply is a few months ahead of demand nationally, but distribution suffers from significant regional disparities.
- Journey charging index: supply is three years ahead of demand, but gaps remain on some major roads.
- Destination charging ratio: car park operators can apply a simple equation to determine what EVI they need for their situation.
- Findings –
-
- Supply is generally ahead of demand but unevenly distributed across regions.
- Gaps persist in journey charging along certain roadways, despite national level oversupply.
- Tailored charging solutions are vital for diverse use cases.
- Open access to data, government collaboration, and targeted investments are necessary to meet the growing demand for EV infrastructure.
